How to Send an Introductory Letter to Agencies
02/17/2006
Category: Agency Information

If you haven’t found agency representation yet, this is for you! Along with your pictures, send an introduction letter to the "New Faces" director at each of the MAJOR agencies only. Do not submit to schools or second-tier agents. Include in your letter the following:

  • Your name
  • Your address
  • All your contact phones - work, cell, home, fax
  • Your Email address

Also include your:

  • Height
  • Weight
  • Bust
  • Waist
  • Hips
  • Hair Color
  • Eye Color
  • Shoe Size
  • Dress Size
  • Any identifying marks you might have: Tattoos, birthmarks, moles, freckles, scars, or piercings.

Put all your contact info on the back of each photo you include with your letter, in case they get separated from each other.

In your letter let the agency know you will get a passport (if you don’t already have one) and are willing to travel, and that school/work is NOT a problem. You should also state that you are open to opportunities that exist in print, runway, and catalog, and that you would like to set up an appointment to be seen in person within the next 2 weeks at their convenience.

In 2-3 weeks, follow up on your letter with a phone call, if you don't hear back first. Then go see each agency on their open call days (usually Wednesday or Thursday from 2-5). Call first to confirm their open call day.

When you call the agency, simply say "Hello, this is (your name) from (your city) just calling to see if you received the photos/letter I sent you on (date you mailed) . I mailed them to (“New Faces” Director) .”

They receive thousands of photos and you don’t want to waste their time. Get right to the point. If they say they have not received your submission yet, offer to email or mail them more. You may have to do this several times. Don’t take it personally. This is only due to the sheer volume of people they have wanting to model. Sometimes it takes weeks to open all the photos they receive. Be patient but if you have not heard from them in 3 weeks, be sure to follow up.

Also, pick up a copy of supermodel Roshumba Williams book "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Being a Model". It is the best book on the market for getting started. Do what she says, and do what we recommend on this sheet, and you will save yourself hundreds or even thousands of dollars and avoid all the modeling scams out there.
