How To Deal With Rejection

Rejection. It's a reality of the modeling business and something most of us will face from the first instant we attempt to pursue our careers. Unless you’ve been lucky enough to have agents and scouts pursuing you, you’ve probably already had your first experience with rejection.

When handling rejection you must constantly remind yourself that this is a business. Nothing that goes into a rejection is personal. When an agency, or a talent scout rejects you, they don't know anything about you personally or even professionally. All their rejection means is that you’re not what they were looking for in that market at that time.

Go to as many castings as you can to increase the odds that you will book out. Nothing quashes rejection like success. Make sure that you stay on top of what's happening in the industry, including current trends, hot markets, and hot agencies, as this knowledge will increase your chances of booking. You may want to sit down periodically with your booker to evaluate your "look" - especially if you haven't been booking out regularly. Make sure your booker is marketing and promoting you to clients in other markets where your look is best suited. If you have a killer runway body, you will book out more by focusing on markets where runway is predominant such as New York, Paris, and Milan. If you are very edgy, consider Milan or New York as your bases. A very commercial look would do well in New York, Atlanta, or Los Angeles. Do you have an excellent swimsuit body? Try spending a season in Miami. You may have tons of potential but are simply targeting the wrong market. Get your booker involved to make sure this isn't the case.

If you are consistently being rejected by clients at castings it may be time to do a self-check to evaluate yourself. Are you in the best possible physical condition? Are you toned? Are you taking proper care of your hair, skin, teeth and nails? Do you have a great attitude at castings; open and pleasant? Do you dress for castings in a way that complements the client’s line of clothing? When going on castings try to match your look to the client. Try to help the client envision you in their project.
