How can I become a member of the Screen Actors Guild? Do I have to be invited?
Dear Mary:
No, you really dont get invited to join. There are three
ways that you can become a member of the Screen Actors Guild.
- If you are hired as a principal actor in a SAG project (film, tv,
commercial or corporate film), then you can join the union.
- If you are a paid-up member of other unions, such as: Actors Equity
(AEA), American Federation of Television and Radio Artists(AFTRA),
Screen Extras Guild (SEG), American Guild of Variety Artists(AGVA) or
the American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA), have been a member for one
year or longer and have worked as a principal performer in one of those
unions, then you may join SAG or cross over to SAG.
- If you are hired for three days of employment as an extra on a SAG
project, and paid as a SAG member (you must tell the casting agent that
you want to join the union), then you can join SAG.
